In
the Blues we have a long standing tradition that involves
the Jam session.
The
tradition is called "Giving it Back".
You see, as a musician, you
take from the Blues, maybe in the form an idea from a previous
performer or just the fact that your getting paid for that
gig.
But
you also have to give back to the Blues.
In
the Blues Jam we indoctrinate the younger players in the Blues.
We provide inspiration and guidance. In doing so we help to
perpetuate the art form.
That's
what "Giving it back" is all about!
This is how
it was explained to me by Chicago Recording Artist ;
Big
Time Sarah StreeterClick!
I was 19 years old and just about to take the stage at my
first Blues Jam. ----at 626 s.Wabash in Chicago--

They
played four songs I had never heard before. I learned each
one on the fly.
I stepped
on that stage as a "Head Banging Heavy Metal Maniac".
I stepped off that stage as a student of the Blues. Indoctrinated
by Big Time Sarah and forever changed.
Hey kid, she said;
Do you know who that was up on stage with you? No...I
answered. That was Diana Ross's Back up Band!... and
that Gentleman over there,.. do you know who that is?...No,
Is it?... Yep!--- That's Buddy Guy!,. She said. He's
still smiling, You did good kid!
So I ask
all of you to go to the Jam sessions and take an aspiring
young musician with you. For those of you who
host Jam Sessions; Never forget what giving it back is all
about!
